If you were hoping to see young Irish actress Saoirse Ronan slip into that form-fitting red spandex costume to play Scarlet Witch, well, don’t.
The Host and Hanna actress has shot down rumors that she would play Wanda Maximoff (who also happens to be X-Men’s Magneto’s daughter) in director Joss Whedon’s The Avengers 2.
She told IFTN:
"That's not happening, no. I think that was just one of those little rumours floating about."
Not too long ago, the actress had actually expressed an interest in the role after it was revealed that Marvel was using her as the “prototype” on which the movie character of Scarlet Witch would be based.
Back in May, Ronan had said:
"I have heard about it and yes, I would. Yeah, of course I would [be interested]," Ronan said. "I love Joss and I love those films, and I love his handle on them and how he portrayed these kinds of superheroes. I think it’s very different from what anyone else has done. So yeah, I’d love to be in it.”
That’s kind of a big 180 right there. Wonder what happened, or rather what DIDN'T happen. Ronan was actually an interesting choice to play Scarlet Witch. She's a solid actress who would have brought a lot to the role.
Back in April, Whedon had confirmed that both Scarlet Witch and her twin brother Quicksilver were set to appear in the Avengers sequel, later explaining how the two mutants would fit in with the Avengers. Meanwhile, X-Men: Days of Future Past director Bryan Singer pulled the mutant rug from under Marvel’s feet by casting its very own Quicksilver in the shape of American Horror Story’s Evan Peters.
But we digress.
What do you think of Saoirse Ronan’s statement that she won’t be in Avengers 2 as Scarlet Witch? Who would you want to see in the role?
