A few weeks ago, when we heard that Lea Thompson was going to pitch Marvel on a Howard the Duck movie, we thought there might be a chance she was kidding… because... Howard the Duck. But after SYFY WIRE spoke with her tonight at the 44th annual Saturn Awards, it turns out she’s totally serious.
We asked specifically why now is the right quacking time to bring back the anthropomorphic intergalactic duck. “I don’t know, but I’m trying to get it done,” said Thompson. “But I don’t know, we’ll see, we’ll see… I’m trying.”
Having recently made her directorial debut with The Year of Spectacular Men, Thompson was going to pitch Marvel on the Howard the Duck idea. And now she sounds slightly optimistic about things.
“When we made Howard the Duck there wasn’t the CGI, there wasn’t the script, there wasn’t the Marvel machine behind it,” said Thompson. “And I think they have a slight appetite for it, since they’re drawing him for Guardians of the Galaxy.”
An appetite for duck?
“An appetite for duck," said Thompson, "duck a l'orange.”
Thompson, of course, starred in Willard Huyck’s duck of a 1986 film alongside Jeffrey Jones, Tim Robbins, and the misunderstood title character, voiced by Chip Zien. She also lent her likeness to Marvel’s Howard the Duck comic series back in 2016. So Thompson certainly knows her way around the universe.
And it's not like we haven't seen Howard in the Marvel Cinematic Universe before in Guardians of the Galaxy volumes 1 and 2.
What do you think, is the Marvel Cinematic Universe ready for a lot more Howard the Duck?
