Straight from the “we sorta knew, but it’s still nice to hear” files, the rather definitive word has finally come that, yes, Brie Larson’s new role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe indeed will include a turn as Captain Marvel in the upcoming Avengers 4 movie.
The source for that tidbit is none other than Black Widow herself. Speaking to Vanity Fair’s Joanna Robinson for a lengthy piece featuring several of the MCU’s key players, Scarlett Johansson casually dropped a reference to Captain Marvel’s appearance in the still-to-be-named film.
Speaking from the set of the fourth Avengers movie, presumably where it's most recently been shooting at Pinewood Atlanta Studios, ScarJo contrasted her long tenure within the MCU against the learning curve that newcomers like Larson are having to negotiate.
“We have Brie Larson on this film,” she said. “She’s here before shooting the stand-alone Captain Marvel movie, so we get to watch her get her feet wet for real.”
Johannson went on to describe her present-day role within the MCU as “bittersweet,” leading some corners of the internet to speculate on whether Black Widow’s exit will be imminent sometime over the course of the next pair of Avengers films.
“I feel a lot of joy for the next generation,” she said, adding: “It’s a bittersweet feeling but overall it’s a positive one. I feel good about the work we’ve done and the work I’ve done.”
Before we get to the May 2019 release of the fourth Avengers film, though, we’ve still got Avengers: Infinity War to look forward to. That film, the first in a two-movie arc that showrunners pledge will have its share of finality (including potential character deaths), is set to hit theaters on May 4 of next year.
