One of the most highly anticipated movies of 2017 is, without a doubt, the Scarlett Johansson-starrer Ghost in the Shell. In order to whet our appetite for the upcoming sci-fi film a new international trailer has dropped.
The Japanese trailer centers mostly on the Avengers actress’ badass Section 9 leader, Major Motoko Kusanagi, aka The Major, and features snippets of new footage to sink our teeth into. Directed by Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) from a screenplay by Jonathan Herman (Straight Outta Compton) and Jamie Moss (Street Kings), Ghost in the Shell is based on the cyberpunk anime and manga series of the same name, created back in 1989 by Masamune Shirow.
Pilou Asbæk (Game of Thrones) stars alongside Johansson as The Major’s right-hand man, Batou, and Beat Takeshi Kitano (Zatoichi) slips into the skin of Lt. Col. Daisuke Aramaki. Chin Han, Danusia Samal, Lasarus Ratuere, Yutaka Izumihara and Tuwanda Manyimo round out the cast as members of Section 9. Also starring are Michael Pitt (Boardwalk Empire) as the villainous Laughing Man and Juliette Binoche (Godzilla) as Dr. Ouelet.
Based on the internationally-acclaimed sci-fi property, Ghost in the Shell follows the Major, a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic’s advancements in cyber technology.
About a month ago, original Ghost in the Shell anime director Mamoru Oshii stamped his seal of approval on the live-action movie, so I'm hoping this means the film will turn out to be pretty good. Crossing my cybernetic fingers! Ghost in the Shell will blast into movie theaters on March 31.
