For all the transformative power that movies have, the one immersive gift they can’t bestow is the one that targets the keenest of senses: smell. Nearly four decades after he lit up that lightsaber on Hoth, we’re still left wondering — what, exactly, was Han smelling when he stuffed Luke into that tauntaun?
While we’re still waiting for a definitive answer that can satisfy our semi-morbid Star Wars curiosity, at least there’s something that’s bringing us one step closer. In an idea so inspired that we wish we’d thought of it ourselves, A24 — the studio behind horror hits like Hereditary and The Witch — is launching a new line of scented candles that aims to bring the odoriferous ambiance of movie genres right into your TV room.
From slasher sheds to dusty trails to rain-soaked streets and more, the goal is to fill in a long-neglected gap in our five senses — one that can capture the essence of how a scary or jubilant movie world must smell to the characters who inhabit it.
A24’s online shop is set to launch the new line of “A24 x Joya Genre Candles” in conjunction with Brooklyn-based fragrance studio Joya. The candles cover six movie genres — Horror, Western, Thriller, Noir, Adventure, and Musical — and promise a burn time of up to 60 hours, “or approximately 33 movies,” as the online storefront cleverly explains.
The descriptions for each genre scent are pretty vivid, which only piques our curiosity even more. Who wouldn't enjoy a perfectly balanced blend of “mandarin, clove leaf, cypress, suede, [and] cinnamon bark,” that's inspired by “fangs, glowing eyes, remote lakeside cabins, foreboding shadows on walls, bloody knives, low-angle staircase shots, dilapidated houses silhouetted on a hill, [and] black cats"?
But can it really recruit our noses in the immersive quest to truly capture, in a single breath, the way a horror movie feels?
There’s only one way to find out, of course. But here’s hoping that more genres will join the lineup, so we can finally get a whiff of a high fantasy alternate universe, or even a galaxy far, far away. In the meantime, you can check out the full genre lineup over at A24’s shop, where the $48 candles are set to begin shipping on Nov. 30.
