Mikey from The Goonies is about to hook up with Lydia from Beetlejuice.

Let that sink in for a minute. All good?

When Stranger Things returns for a hotly anticipated second season sometime this year on Netflix, the story will pick up in the fall of 1984, one year after the events of Season 1. The people we fell in love with will return (alas, sans Barb), but the show's sophomore season will also introduce some new characters to the town of Hawkins, Indiana.

One of these new characters will be played by Samwise Gamgee himself, Sean Astin, who recently joined the cast as Bob Newby, "a kindhearted former nerd who … manages the local Hawkins Radio Shack" and a former classmate of Hawkins Chief of Police Jim Hopper (David Harbour) and Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder).

During the Stranger Things panel at Fan2Sea Comic Con cruise on Jan. 21 (as reported by Hollywood Life), Harbour dropped a few more tidbits about Astin's character, revealing that he'll play Joyce's new boyfriend:

"We have Sean Astin … he's Winona's new boyfriend — much to the chagrin to the Chief of Police. It's a year later in the story, so there are several things that happened last year — like Will has come back — there are certain people in the town that know what happened, and then certain people that don't know what happened. So there's a lot of fall out with who knows what."

So it looks like fans of Joyce and Hopper will have to wait a bit longer to see them get together (if that's what the Duffer Brothers have in the cards for them, of course). But heck, Sean Astin is so totally awesome, this pairing actually sounds like a match made in geek heaven. Except to Hopper, of course.

Stranger Things stars Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Cara Buono, Noah Schnapp and Joe Keery. Along with Sean Astin, new cast members include Brett Gelman, Linnea Berthelsen, Dacre Montgomery, Rob Morgan, Sadie Sink and Paul Reiser (Burke from Aliens).
