The look for the characters of Star Trek: The Next Generation are, even after all these years, absolutely iconic. Whether it's Data's eyes and skin tone, Geordi's visor or Troi's ridiculous bunny suit. But all great things have humble beginnings.

In the video below, you'll see a multitude of makeup ideas for Brent Spiner's Cmdr. Data, including a different eye color and a few alternate skin colors. In addition, several stand-ins, one with a SUPER 80's Jheri curl, testing the visor before LeVar Burton finally turns up to give the camera the old thumbs-up.

Picard, Riker, Wesley and Yar all make appearances in the video, too, each taking turns trying not to laugh when they're being filmed, with varying degrees of success. Bless Mirina Sirtis, though, for enduring a number of horrific hairstyles, some of which even made it to final filming (we're looking at you, oddly phallic up-do).

What do you think? Would you have preferred any of these alternate looks, or did the crew get it right?
