If you were wondering exactly how things went from a few rogue apes at the end of Rise of the Planet of the Apes to a full-on ape revolution in the upcoming Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, we have the answer.

As has been teased in previous trailers, it seems a monkey-related disease dubbed the Simian Flu decimates the human population and cripples world governments, which apparently gives Caesar and his ape brethren the upper hand to become the planet’s dominant species.

The revealing new clip below seems to bridge the gap of the six years since the end of Rise, showing the virus as it spreads and the effect its had on humanity.

The sequel stars Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, Keri Russell, Andy Serkis, Kirk Acevedo, Toby Kebbell, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Enrique Murciano and Judy Greer. It was directed by Matt Reeves (Cloverfield).

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes opens July 11.
