Today we get our first look at a new take on Peter Pan -- and this time it's a prequel.
Yes, that's right, Pan is an origin story for not just little Peter (Levi Miller) but also for Captain Hook (Garrett Hedlund), who's portrayed here as a sort of swaggering, rogueish Indiana Jones-type hero. That leaves the bad-guy duties to Hugh Jackman as Blackbeard, complete with unfortunate hairdo choices and a ship that actually flies through the air.
I have to say that, in some ways, this looks like every other fairy tale/children's classic "re-imagining" that has come down the pipeline in recent years, complete with Peter himself being the "chosen one" and lots of action, weapons and special effects where none previously existed in the text.
But at the same time, director Joe Wright has delivered a lot of quality films -- including the criminally underseen sci-fi/spy mashup Hanna -- and always has a lot of stylistic tricks up his sleeve, so we'll see what he brings to the party here. And of course, there's always Jackman, who livens up every movie he's in.
Watch the trailer below and tell us if you think the "untold story" of Peter Pan is worth telling this way. Pan, which also stars Rooney Mara, Amanda Seyfried, Kathy Burke and others, wings its way into theaters July 17, 2015.
