Guillermo del Toro has been scaring American audiences since he and Ron Perlman first got together in 1993's Cronos. In that time, he's done one heckuva a job at creating the kind of worlds pitched to keep us feeling constantly on edge. He's discovered that same kind of horror with Andres Muschietti's short film Mama, and he wants us to see why he was so game to produce a feature based on that short.
In his introduction to the video, del Toro talks about finding this short and says it's "one of the scariest little scenes I've ever seen." What makes it so scary? Well, consider what feelings the word "mama" traditionally evokes, and then imagine the exact opposite of that and you'll begin to get an idea. Ready? Take a look for yourself.
Nothing like the sound of screaming children, eh? What do you think? Does this have the potential to be as good and scary as the del Toro-produced The Orphanage was back in 2007?
The feature-length version of Mama opens Jan. 18, 2013.
