Between all the different series and movies, there’s no shortage of cool Star Trek memorabilia to track down for fans who care enough. But it’s hard to argue that there are any cooler items than this: Capt. Kirk’s original phaser.
The little piece of sci-fi lore, used in the second pilot commissioned for the show, went up for auction recently and sold at Julien’s auction house for a cool $231,000. After seeing the price, it’s worth clarifying—this is only for the screen-used prop, not a real, functioning phaser weapon. Just sayin’.
Though that price may seem high, it pales in comparison to the $576,000 a fan paid in 2006 for a miniature model of the Next Generation-era Enterprise used for special-effects modeling. Oh yeah, not to mention the $304,750 paid for the Original Series captain’s chair. You know that guy (or gal) has that thing sitting in the center of their home entertainment system setup right now.
Considering the place Star Trek holds in sci-fi history, it’s no surprise that Kirk’s phaser and all this other gear can bring such a high price. All these decades later, Kirk is still the definition of cool.
Who wouldn’t want his weapon of choice sitting proudly on a shelf, assuming you have the disposable income?
