With filming now underway on the pilot for The CW's (hopeful) Smallville successor Arrow, some set pics are starting to leak out that show how the Green Arrow comics are being imagined for the small screen—and it seems at least one character is getting a makeover.
It appears the character of Dinah Lance (Katie Cassidy), who doubles as Black Canary in the DC comics lore, is dropping her traditional blond look for a more subdued brunette style in Arrow. Though we know she'll be playing Lance, we still don't know if she'll don the mask and officially take up the Black Canary mantle.
Cassidy (Harper's Island, A Nightmare on Elm Street) is taking over for Alaina Huffman (Stargate Universe), who played a separate imagining of Lance in Smallville. Interestingly enough, the character of Dinah Lance first graced The CW back in the WB days, on the short-lived 2002 Gotham-set Birds of Prey, played by Rachel Skarsten (also blond).
As for the general look of Arrow, the pics are light on spoilers but fit with previous comments that the series will be a grittier, darker take on the superhero trope, i.e. no obvious, bright colors to be found.
What do you think? Can Arrow fill that Smallville-sized hole on the schedule?
