Those in need of a magical shock of new info about Shazam were in luck today, because the superhero project had two rounds of info for fans interested in the magical, body-transforming hero. After debuting its shiny new logo (which you can see below), DC’s Shazam film went live on social media, where stars Asher Angel and Zachary Levi answered fan questions.
Check out the Facebook Live video, recorded today on the film's carnival set:
Angel plays Billy Batson, who, courtesy of a wizard, can shout “Shazam!” and turn into a very jacked version of Levi. That means Superman-level powers with the mind of a kid, blasting and punching all he can -- until he learns to mature, presumably over the course of his first standalone film. They face off against Mark Strong’s villainous Dr. Thaddeus Sivana, with the help of Batson’s foster family and friends.
These friends dropped perhaps the biggest hint/reference during the livestream, as the kids came out all with stuffed tigers. Could be their game winnings, sure. But it could also be a nod to Tawky Tawny, a stuffed tiger with a few different DC backstories.
The one most relevant to the DCEU is the ‘90s post-Crisis The Power of Shazam! book, where Tawky Tawny was a doll owned by Billy Batson's sister Mary that helps create Black Adam by being used to conceal a scarab necklace, which gives him access to his powers. That comic goes on to have the tiger get magical powers itself, gaining the ability to transform into a six-foot anthropomorphic tiger and becoming a hero in his own right.
Is such a storyline in the film certain? No. But the film has referenced the tiger before:
Shazam! is set for release on Apr. 5, 2019.
