Marvel’s new series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been dropping a ton of hints about Agent Coulson’s resurrection, but fans recently latched on to a bit of dialogue that hints at another character’s demise (and return). Turns out we all got it wrong.

In the recent episode “FZZT,” Agent Melinda May (Ming-na Wen) is chatting with Coulson (Clark Gregg) about his near-death experience, and with an understanding nod, notes, “You know how long it's taken me to…” before trailing off.

Many fans took that tidbit to mean May might also be resurrected/a Life Model Decoy/[insert other Coulson theory], but producer Maurissa Tancharoen says that is not the case. Instead, that line was meant to convey they both have past traumas, not specifically death traumas.

Here’s her explanation:

“That is a misinterpretation. They were just connecting on an emotional level about being scared by a traumatic experience. You come back from a trauma like that changed and all you can do is move forward. It's nice that they have that moment together because you feel the history of their friendship and you feel that, even though their relationship may be different now because she is a different person, there is a still a nice grounded touchstone that they have with each other.”

So, there you have it — apparently Coulson is the only one with a capital-M Mystery surrounding his continued existence.

What’s your best Coulson theory? How do you think it'll all play out?
