After a slow start, things are finally starting to heat up on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - and the latest episode left us with a cliffhanger right out of the Joss Whedon playbook.

Spoilers ahead for the latest episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.!

As we saw Tuesday night, the spy-fi hijinks took a dark turn after resident hacker and aspiring field agent Skye (Chloe Bennet) took two bullets to the belly and was left to die in a basement. For a show that has always carried the (almost too) bright, Marvel-esque aesthetic -- it made for a very stark, gritty visual to see a team member choking own her own blood. Honestly, it was a welcome change of pace.

Luckily for Skye, the team found her pretty quickly, though her fate was still definitely left in the air by episode’s end. So, might Whedon and company knock off a core team member this early in the show's run? Hey, considering his track record, you can’t put it past the former Buffy, Firefly and Angel showrunner.

The folks at TV Guide were able to catch up with Bennett and ask her about the twist during a recent set visit, and she noted that her shooting will absolutely affect the show in a big way. When asked if it could actually lead to her character’s death, the actress got coy:

“It's definitely going to seriously change the tone of the show. It's a Joss Whedon show.”

Considering the fact that killing main characters hasn’t been a major part of Marvel’s grand plan up to this point, our money is still on Skye eventually making a triumphant return to her hacker ways. But Whedon has killed people we love a lot more than Skye, and a shocking midseason death could be just the thing to jolt some life into the series.

What do you think? Should Skye live or die?
