I was a teenager in June of 1982 when John Carpenter's The Thing invaded California theaters alongside Steven Spielberg's E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.  I shunned the cute and cuddly alien and instead opted for the creepy Antarctic claustrophobia of The Thing, lucky enough to score an opening day movie poster button and view it in booming 70mm, 6-track Dolby stereo at the Castro Theatre in San Francisco.  When those Norwegian chopper blades roared overhead from the back of the auditorium, and the ominous Ennio Morricone score began, I was in sublime geek heaven.  The Thing's influence and reputation has only grown over the past decades,  and it's considered one of John Carpenter's finest achievements, far more faithful to the John W. Campbell novella it was adapted from, Who Goes There?, than the 1951 version directed by Christian Nyby.

Just in time for its 35th anniversary next year, Shout Factory is releasing a crystal-clear new 2K HD collector's edition of The Thing on September 20, 2016.  This beautiful prestige transfer was supervised and approved by cinematographer Dean Cundey himself.  Inside the sensational 2-disc set is a fresh blizzard of new audio commentaries, cast and crew interviews, featurettes, documentaries and promos.  Please take my cash NOW!!
