One of his wildest unfinished projects is Road of the Dead, a crazy horror flick where zombie convicts are forced to race souped-up hot rods around a gladiator arena track on a remote island. Romero co-wrote the sci-fi comedy with longtime collaborator Matt Birman, who will also direct the film.
Road of the Dead is currently still in pre-production, but to feed fans hunger for the next installment of Romero's 50-year-old zombie franchise, IDW Publishing is delivering a lip-smacking comic book prequel adaptation sure to quell healthy desires and SYFY WIRE has an exclusive preview for you to chomp on.
Road of the Dead: Highway To Hell is a three-issue miniseries written by New York Times bestselling author Jonathan Maberry (V-Wars) with insane interior art by Drew Moss (Copperhead). This shocking series acts as an over-the-top prequel to Romero's final zombie film and expands upon the horrific mythology. Santiperez provides a delirious dose of gore-filled variants to accompany the brain-munching mayhem.
The storyline has legions of deadheads feasting on the living as a young female scientist holds the secret to a possible cure for the savage pandemic. On the run for her life, famished zombies, looney looters, and ruthless biker gangs hit the road to try and stop this savior, while lovable losers in muscle cars and a hijacked Abrams tank risk everything to save her. Enter for the crack writing and visceral art, stay for the twisted humor and anticipation of the next issue!
I was ten years old when I snuck into a movie theater to see the world premier of Night of the Living Dead," Maberry told SYFY WIRE. "I've spent way too much of my life figuring out how I'd survive the zombie apocalypse -- which is something I confessed to George Romero on one of our long, rambling phone conversations while we were editing the Nights of the Living Dead anthology.
"When the chance came up to dive back into that world for Road of the Dead: Highway To Hell, I jumped at it. I mean, how could I not? This is a bunch of misfit heroes in an Abrams tank against biker gangs, unregulated militia, monster trucks and zombie hordes. I have an absurd amount of fun with this."
