Shyamalan’s Wayward Pines sees biggest gains of any show this season with DVR numbers

The series premiere of M. Night Shyamalan’s mystery thriller Wayward Pines looked dead on arrival last week on Fox, but some new DVR viewership data shows a staggering 90 percent increase from the live numbers. Whoa.

The series premiere scored a ho-hum 1.0 rating/3 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic, which would typically mean this event series would be lucky to finish out its season without getting bumped and dumped to a garbage timeslot. But once the Live +3 DVR numbers were released, the debut grew 90 percent to a 1.9 rating/6 share, according to Nielsen’s Live +3 measurement. As The Wrap notes, that marks the biggest playback increase for any series premiere on the five broadcast nets this season.

Not bad, and it’ll be extremely interesting to see how the numbers may translate to a potential increase in live viewing in future weeks (a decidedly rare occurrence from a series premiere, which typically represents a ratings high from curious viewers). But, with many shows wrapping up and going on summer hiatus, some of those 6.2 million viewers who watched the show live and on DVR could shore up the numbers. Only time will tell.

Though Wayward Pines is obviously on the far end of the spectrum here as far as viewership gains, it’s a fascinating test case for the massive shift in how most of us watch television. We’re watching as much (or more) TV as ever, but most of it is time-shifted. Will Fox have some faith, knowing some viewers really are there (albeit not live), or will Wayward Pines get shipped off to the Friday Night Death Slot in the sky?

As TV industry veteran Ted Linhart notes, DVR viewership isn’t going anywhere, and Wayward Pines will likely be just one of many examples of massive ratings shifts in the broadcast landscape as we move forward.
