We already had an inkling that X-Men: Days of Future Past would largely be set in the First Class era with the younger cast, and now it sounds like that decision has cost an original series star a spot in the sequel.
Entertainment Weekly is reporting that director Bryan Singer has decided to chop Anna Paquin’s (Rogue) only scene in the film, a rescue sequence that was done early in production, due to time and pacing issues. The scene also featured Iceman (Shawn Ashmore), Professor X (Patrick Stewart) and Magneto (Ian McKellen). If we had to guess, we’d think it plays into whatever events lead up to Wolverine’s trip back through time.
Interestingly, this news comes after we've already gotten a look at Paquin in the film — via that first teaser trailer. Here’s how Singer explained the string of events:
“Through the editing process, the sequence became extraneous. It’s a really good sequence and it will probably end up on the DVD so people can see it. But like many things in the editing process, it was an embarrassment of riches and it was just one of the things that had to go. Unfortunately, it was the one and only sequence Anna Paquin was in, the Rogue character was in. Even though she’s in the materials and part of the process of making the film, she won’t appear in it.
She did a fantastic job. She was awesome in the sequence. She’s a brilliant actress. I would work with her in a heartbeat. She completely understood. It’s very disappointing, but she’s very professional and she knows that stuff happens, particularly with material you shoot early on in production. Films evolve.”
Obviously, it sucks that we won’t get to see Rogue kick some future-ass (though Singer admitted the scene could show up in a future Blu-ray release), but it’s nice to see Singer make a tough call for what he believes is the good of the film. It’d be easy to keep the scene in just because Paquin is a fairly big star now, thanks to True Blood, but it sounds like Singer wants to make sure Days of Future Past is a tight, focused entry in the franchise.
But, despite the editing decision, there is apparently still an outside shot that Paquin could sneak back into the final cut. After this initial story broke, HitFix reported some of their sources believe it is “possible" Paquin could be used in some upcoming reshoots, which would essentially add her to a new/reshot scene.
What do you think? Are you bummed we might not get a chance to see Rogue again?
