Six months ago, fans were left gutted when Showtime's critically acclaimed horror series, Penny Dreadful, was canceled without any warning at the end of Season 3. Then a small sliver of hope arose at the end of October, when it was officially announced that the story would be continuing as an ongoing comic series (thank you, Titan Comics!) ... and we now have six cool variant covers from the first issue to share.
While people sat down to watch the show's Season 3 finale, what they actually got was a series finale with the words THE END tacked on at, well, the end. Even worse (yep, it got worse), the show had just killed off the heart of the series: Vanessa Ives (Eva Green).
Even though Penny Dreadful is now dead and buried on TV, co-executive producer Chris King is picking up the story six months after the dramatic events of the finale, with the story centering on the show’s American Werewolf in London, Ethan Chandler (played by Josh Hartnett on the show).
How can the story possibly go on without Vanessa? Looks like the new comic will address the issue head on. Here's what the official press release revealed:
Titan Comics is excited to share the covers from Penny Dreadful #1 – a brand-new ongoing series, entitled "The Awaking," which is set six months after the shocking events of Season Three of the Showtime original series, Penny Dreadful.
Written by Penny Dreadful TV series co-executive producer Chris King with interior art from Jesús Hervás (Sons of Anarchy) and colors by Jason Wordie, this new comic sees Ethan Chandler unable to move on. As he searches desperately for meaning in a world without Vanessa, ancient words echo across the centuries, and he is called on once again to take up arms against the creatures crawling out of the night.
The first issue of Titan Comics' Penny Dreadful will boast six stunning covers from various artists, including Louie De Martinis (Penny Dreadful prequel miniseries), Rob Davis (The Motherless Oven), Stephen Mooney (Half Past Danger) and Shane Pierce (Judge Dredd, Vikings), as well as two photo covers.
Set up your Google Alerts as Penny Dreadful #1: The Awaking will arrive in comic book stores and on digital platforms on April 5. Have a look at the covers below and let us know if the new Penny Dreadful comic will be on your Must Buy list.
