Sleepy Hollow drops Headless Horseman for Season 3 as part of creative shake-up

After a breakout freshman season, Sleepy Hollow hit the creative skids in year two, and the ratings took a dip. The producers are trying to right the ship in Season 3, and they’ve decided to drop a component that’s been there since the show’s conception.

TV Guide reports new showrunner Clifton Campbell has confirmed there will be no Headless Horeseman in Season 3 as the writers work to establish a less dense mythology that will make the adventure series more accessible for new viewers. The character was the baddie who launched the insanity in the pilot episode and grew into a major force for the first two seasons, as his identity and close connection to Crane (Tom Mison) was revealed.

Considering where they left Headless’ story in Season 2, it’s not much of a surprise to see him put on the sidelines for (at least) a year. Along with the Horseman, the series has also axed regular and recurring co-stars Orlando Jones (Irving), Katia Winter (Katrina), John Noble (Henry) and Matt Barr (Hawley). It’s an ambitious creative reboot, to say the least. All that remain are Tom Mison (Crane), Nicole Behave (Abbie) and Lyndie Greenwood (Jenny).

To help fill some of the void left by Irving and Hawley, the series will reportedly bring back the character Joe Corbin (Zach Appelman) to round out the ranks. He was last seen as a Wendigo, before being cured by the team. He’ll be working with Jenny, giving her a partner akin to how Crane and Abbie work together.

We’re morbidly curious to see how the third-season Sleepy Hollow comes together, and it’s no easy task to try and make this show fun again. The first season was the perfect mix of insane adventure and taut mythology — all of which collapsed into itself in Season 2. Recapturing that magic is much easier said than done.

What do you think of the changes that have been made? Is Sleepy Hollow back on the right track?
