After getting bumped from its May release date after a bout with controversy thanks to the real-life tragedy associated with its subject matter, Sylvain White’s Slender Man has released a new trailer hoping to distance itself from anything but horror entertainment. The meme-based film focuses on a viral image of a skinny being in a dark suit that appears in the background of photographs.
The Victor Surge-created character has been the subject of stories and video games before, but the movie is combining this lore with the quest of some hapless high schoolers to find their obsessed friend (which is where the real-life connections have been alleged to begin). However, this new trailer leans hard on the conspiratorial and the supernatural.
Take a look:
The special effects and emphasis on tentacles, odd symbols, and fingers that are way, way too long help distance the movie from any sort of realistic cultishness and place the film squarely in the realm of the otherworldly. The teens play by the internet’s rules in order to find their friend, but if the tease is any indication, things do NOT go well for them.
Slender Man slinks into theaters on Aug. 10.
