Last summer, Waxwork Records, the premiere purveyors of remastered cult classic vinyl soundtracks, launched its new Waxwork Comics line, and it was a monster hit.
House of Waxwork #1 and #2 combined the geeky goodness of an old-fashioned, EC-style anthology horror comic paired with a 7" companion vinyl record of original music to listen to as you turn the terrifying pages. By dipping into the deep well of nostalgia, Waxwork created a classic hybrid to please a broad spectrum of the pop culture market.
Now Waxwork Comics is back with its third release, titled Poser — a chilling multi-issue slasher comic, written by Matt Miner with art by Clay McCormack, and matching soundtrack composed by Joel Grind of Toxic Holocaust. It's set in the Southern California punk-rock scene and is filled with evocative artwork and penetrating tracks to form a perfect union of sound, words, and imagery. Poser #1 arrives on March 9 and can be purchased at Waxwork Records for $14.95.
Waxwork co-founder Kevin Bergeron has spent some time in the mosh pit himself as the member of many punk bands over the years, and he believes that if you're the slightest bit interested in masked, knife-wielding slashers a la John Carpenter's Halloween, or heavy music, you'll absolutely love Poser.
"I have a background in playing with hardcore punk bands," Bergeron tells SYFY WIRE. "From age 14 through 30, I was nonstop. Punk shows, angst, fast loud songs, all wrapped up with my affinity for horror movies.""When the opportunity to oversee and release a multi-issue horror comic book series that takes place in the SoCal punk scene presented itself, I stage-dived right in faster than Robo's drumming on Earth A.D.," he added. "Poser comes hot off the heels of our ongoing house-branded anthology horror comic series, House of Waxwork. The response to House of Waxwork has been massive and overwhelmingly positive, and we're excited to make the jump into the world of creator-owned comics with Poser."
Here's the official description:
Penned by Matt Miner and illustrated by Clay McCormack, POSER is a brand new punk rock horror-comic series that Steve Niles (30 Days Of Night) calls “relentless and brutal” and Sean Murphy (Punk Rock Jesus, Tokyo Ghost, Hellblazer) raves is a “master class in sequential storytelling”. POSER features colors by Doug Garbark and Letters by Taylor Esposito.
In continuing with Waxwork’s acclaimed combination of original music with great storytelling, POSER features an all new companion soundtrack by Joel Grind (Toxic Holocaust) pressed to colored 7” vinyl. Enjoy the Black Flag meets John Carpenter “Poser Theme”, and the climactic Discharge meets Tangerine Dream infused track “The Gig”.
