Smallville's Tom Welling is returning to TV to star in the new CBS drama series Section 13.

The drama, which is currently in development, hails from Warner Bros. TV and studio-based Tom Welling Productions and is written by Bones alumna Carla Kettner. The upcoming series will mark Welling’s return to television since the “no tights, no flights” superhero series ended its 10-year run in 2011.

In Section 13, Welling will play the role of a CIA black ops officer-turned-private-contractor who joins a secret organization that tackles the most difficult, dangerous high-stakes assignments in the wake of a personal tragedy. Welling and Kettner (who is currently an executive producer on Fox’s Bones and CBS’ Zoo) will executive-produce.

As you guys know, Tom Welling is mostly known for playing a young Clark Kent (a role that was beloved by a lot of fans) on The CW’s Smallville for the entirety of the series. After the show ended, the actor concentrated on landing big-screen gigs and nabbed minor roles in Parkland, Draft Day and The Choice. During Smallville’s run, Welling starred in Cheaper by the Dozen and its sequel, Cheaper by the Dozen 2, and had a star turn in the disappointing remake of John Carpenter’s The Fog.

As for Welling’s production company, it has developed and sold multiple projects for WBTV. One of them was the cheerleader drama Hellcats, which went to series at The CW with Welling executive-producing. The series only aired for one season (2010-2011) before being canceled.

Are you excited about Tom Welling's return to TV? What do you think of the premise for Section 13?
