A brand-new—and, let's face it, EPIC (what else?)—The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug trailer has just been released, and it’s all about the king under the mountain.
While some lucky bastards fans got treated recently to 20 minutes of previously unseen footage during a Q&A livestream fan event by Peter Jackson and Warner Bros., we at least got this brand-new "sneak peek" (THAT really feels more like a trailer) for the upcoming flick in all its glorious epicness.
So who’s that king under the mountain? Well, it’s none other than that pesky dragon Smaug (Benedict Cumberbatch, voice-acting all sinister), who snarls "I am king under the mountain" and breathes fire in the third trailer for Jackson’s second Hobbit opus.
The sneak peek offers some fresh new footage with plenty of drama and action, and a chilling voice-over by Bard the Bowman, played by Luke Evans.
Our brave hobbit and acting thief Bilbo (Martin Freeman), Gandalf the Grey (Sir Ian McKellen) and Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) and the company of dwarves continue on their quest to retrieve the gold beneath the Lonely Mountain and reclaim the Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor. En route they encounter massive grade-A spiders (brrr) as well as the elves of Mirkwood and their Elvenking Thranduil (Lee Pace). Back for more bow-and-arrow action is Legolas (Orlando Bloom), and we’re introduced to Tauriel (Evangeline Lilly).
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug will be unleashed in theatres on Dec. 13, 2013.
What did you think of the new trailer? Does The Desolation of Smaug feel much more epic than An Unexpected Journey?
