Buffy the Vampire Slayer may have ended its TV run in 2003, but Buffy still fights the good fight in the pages of Dark Horse comics. Now Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight, which continued the story of the slayer and her slayerettes, is also coming to an end.

To make it up to her, Dark Horse is releasing the last issue on Jan. 11, 2011—Buffy's 30th birthday. And to commemorate the occasion, the issue will be written by Joss Whedon.

When Whedon wasn't producing Dollhouse, writing and directing Doctor Horrible and prepping for the Avengers movie, in his "spare time" he's also been writing comic books. (We have Whedon to thank for Frey and Astonishing X-Men.)

Whedon and other Mutant Enemy writers, including Jane Espenson and Doug Petrie, have been giving Buffy a run for our money: Plots include Japanese vampires and Oz's Tibetan sanctuary. And because the writers can use their imaginations without budget concerns, we get to see improbable storylines, like Dawn becoming a giant and later turning into a centaur.

So although it's Buffy's birthday,we're the ones getting a present. And thanks to MTV, we have sneak peak at the final issue. Check it out below.

And if to prove that life doesn't end after 30, season nine is already in the works.
