Casting for TNT's Snowpiercer TV series is heating up, with Deadline announcing that acclaimed actress Jennifer Connelly (The Rocketeer, A Beautiful Mind, Requiem for a Dream) is signed on to co-star with Hamilton's Daveed Diggs in the upcoming snow-crusted adaptation.
Doctor Strange's Scott Derrickson is directing the hour-long series pilot, which occurs seven years following the ecological disaster that has rendered the planet an icy hellhole, as the last gasp of mankind is packed on a constantly moving supertrain encircling the Earth.
Connelly's character is Melanie Cavill, a First Class passenger who is sympathetic to the needs of the poor lower class riders and employed as the popular "Voice of the Train," making the daily news and instructional announcements over its loudspeaker system. Diggs portrays Layton Well, a clever prisoner who becomes an uncooperative participant in a pivotal battle that could tip the nature of power aboard the speeding train.
Tomorrow Studios optioned the rights to Snowpiercer in 2016 and hired Josh Friedman (War of the Worlds, Avatar, The Sarah Connor Chronicles) to write the small-screen adaptation.
“TNT has become a great producing partner to Tomorrow Studios, and we are excited to continue our relationship with them on Snowpiercer, for which we not only have a pilot but are writing multiple scripts,” said Adelstein, CEO of Tomorrow Studios. “This is an incredibly powerful story and one for which finding the perfect home was imperative to its success.”
