Last night’s episode of Arrow saw Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) getting arrested on charges of being the Green Arrow, his bail revoked thanks to the evil machinations of Ricardo Diaz (Kirk Acevedo), who now basically owns all of Star City. With Oliver currently facing a life sentence in prison, next week’s installment, titled “Docket No. 11-19-41-73,” will see the return of Colin Donnell in the role of Tommy Merlyn.
The actor took to Twitter to tease his return to The CW superhero series, where we see Donnell literally sitting in Amell’s chair, suited up in a costume similar to the one Oliver wears as the Emerald Archer.
In the promo for next week’s episode, the video hints that “getting justice will take a miracle,” and a miracle is what they may very well get. Enter Tommy Merlyn crashing through the ceiling in full Green Arrow gear, revealing himself to the whole court. Now, that would certainly help Oliver's case, right?
Tommy Merlyn was the son of Malcolm Merlyn (John Barrowman) and Oliver Queen’s BFF in the first season of Arrow, but the character tragically died in the Season 1 finale. Since then, Donnell has made sporadic appearances as the character in flashbacks, computer simulations and the like. His last appearance was in the epic Crisis on Earth-X crossover, where he played the Earth-X version of Tommy, who had adopted the alter ego of Prometheus. Could this mean that this one is also a doppelgänger from another Earth? It seems like the most obvious answer, since there are plenty of alt-universes to pick from.
But there's more: Donnell’s video was retweeted by Amell with the caption “Open your eyes Tommy...,” which were Oliver’s last words to his friend as he died in front of him in Season 1. Could Amell be implying that this version really is Earth-1's Tommy, finally brought back? Heck, it certainly wouldn't be the first time a dead character would be resurrected in the Arrowverse.
There have been speculations that the Season 6 finale would change things forever and that the show would be going back to basics next year (it's already had some creative shake-ups to pave the way, and former co-star Colton Haynes is set to return as a series regular). Could the return of Tommy Merlyn be in the cards as well?
Which also begs the question: Which version of Tommy are we getting? The show brought Laurel back with her Earth-2 version, so there's certainly a precedent. One thing's for sure, we can't wait to see what happens next.
The next episode of Arrow airs May 3 on The CW.
