Last year it was revealed that fan-fiction site Wattpad had partnered with entertainment distribution company Entertainment One to develop original TV, feature film, and virtual-reality projects. And it seems as though the company is already making some serious headway.

Deadline reports that Sony Pictures Television has now acquired the rights to one Wattpad user's work, Katarina E. Tonks, whose darkly comic fantasy series Death Is My BFF has been a huge hit on the Toronto-based storytelling app, having clocked up a massive 92 million reads.

For those that don't know, Wattpad is a community for readers and writers to publish new user-generated stories in different genres, including science fiction, fan fiction, and teen fiction, among many other categories. It combines crowdsourced content along with professionally produced material, creating an exciting platform to produce and consume genre content. Tonks's story follows the Grim Reaper -- described as hilariously sarcastic, evil, and irresistible -- who will do whatever it takes to get protagonist Faith Williams to be his. His only problem? Faith has to sign his contract in her blood, and there's no way in Hell she's doing that without a fight.

Per the report, head of Wattpad Studios, Aron Levitz, says the story “combines the best of romance and dark humor, and has connected with millions of fans globally.”

As well as accumulating millions of stories over the years, last year Wattpad managed to raise $70 million in funding. Wattpad Studios recently partnered with the likes of CW Seed, Universal Cable Productions, and eOne, in various projects and deals.
