It looks like Sony's moving forward trying to make the most of its Spider-Man universe. The studio has announced a director for the Amazing Spider-Man spinoff Sinister Six. Late last year, they hired Cabin in the Woods director Drew Goddard to write the film's script, with the possibility of directing. According to The Hollywood Reporter, that possibility has turned into a definite reality.

Goddard will direct Sinister Six from his own screenplay. The story will be based on a group of Spider-Man's most notorious villains. In the comic, there have been various incarnations, which have included Doctor Octopus, Electro, Sandman, Mysterio, Vulture and Kraven the Hunter.

Sony also brought on Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Ed Solomon to write another spinoff based on Venom. That character previously appeared in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3, with reults that were ... well ... not so good. Kurtzman is also expected to direct the film. Meanwhile, he and Orci are working on the third installment of the Amazing Spider-Man series.

Goddard's spent most of his career writing and producing genre fare such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Cloverfield and Lost. In 2012, he directed The Cabin in the Woods, which he co-wrote with Joss Whedon. Goddard's also expected to write and executive-produce Marvel's Daredevil series for Netflix.

Does this bode well for the Spidey-verse? Stay tuned, true believers.
