The days of aimlessly walking the aisles of your local Blockbuster every Friday night have been over for years in most parts of the United States. But now with the last two stores in Alaska closing, soon only one Blockbuster will remain.
At the end of August, two of the remaining three Blockbuster video rental stores will shut their doors for good. The Hollywood Reporter spoke with Kevin Daymude, Blockbuster Alaska general manager who said lease increases ultimately led to the demise of these final two stores: one in Anchorage and one in Fairbanks.
Back in April, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver featured the remaining Alaskan Blockbusters (at that time there were three). In the segment, Oliver offered movie memorabilia to the stores to help increase business. And what did he donate? A jockstrap from Cinderella Man worn by Russell Crowe in addition to several other Russell Crowe-related prop items. The Anchorage store displayed these pieces of movie history and Daymude claims it actually worked. "You would not believe how much business we got just from that memorabilia alone," he said.
Yet, here we are months later with soon-to-be one Blockbuster remaining in all of the 50 states. That lucky honor goes to a store in Bend, Oregon. THR spoke to manager Sandi Harding about the honor of being the lone store left in the entire country. In what might come as a huge relief, she said, "We have no plans on closing anytime soon." SYFY WIRE has also reached out to the Bend, Oregon store for comment.
So it seems like if you want to relive your greatest Blockbuster memories, you still have time.
