Netflix is taking the Robinson family where they’ve never gone before with a new adaptation of Lost in Space, and the first full trailer introduces the core cast, wild alien planets, and a whole lot more.
This version of the classic sci-fi series looks far darker and more grounded than the classic series and the big-screen reboot from 1998, diving into the wondrous terror of actually crash-landing a spaceship on an alien planet. The effects are top-notch, and the mix of child and adult actors look to be a good ensemble to carry the story. The pitch is simple but effective: The Robinson family sets off to establish a new human colony in space, until things go horribly wrong.
We get a first look at Parker Posey as the shady Dr. Smith, along with stars Tobey Stephens as mission commander John Robinson, Molly Parker as Maureen Robinson, and Ignacio Serricchio as Don West. The kids are played by Taylor Russell, Mina Sundwall, and Max Jenkins. The crew’s robot is also revealed, and it seems this version might be an alien intelligence who joins up with the family. But don’t worry, he still knows how to say “Danger, Will Robinson.”
As for the big-budget look, it makes sense, as several episodes were directed by The Descent alum Neil Marshall. Marshall has carved out quite a niche in television the past few years, helming episodes of Westworld, Timeless, Hannibal, Game of Thrones, and Constantine.
The full season of Lost in Space drops April 13 on Netflix.
