The 2008 Indiana Jones sequel Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was bad for a lot of reasons, but that ridiculous nuked fridge scene was one of the worst offenders. Now, we finally know who to blame.

Steven Spielberg popped up at a recent special screening of Raiders of the Lost Ark in Los Angeles, and the now-infamous Crystal Skull scene where Indy rides out a bomb explosion in a refrigerator came up while chatting with fans. Needless to say, Spielberg had some explaining to do.

You’ve got to give the guy credit — he can admit when he’s messed up. Here’s an excerpt from his comments:

"I know in Indy 4, you didn't buy the refrigerator and the atomic bomb... I know! I know! But we tried! We tried! I was pushing the envelope! By the way, I take full responsibility for that -- that was completely my idea! Even Harrison said to me: 'Nobody is going to buy this!’"

At least Harrison Ford hasn’t lost his mind, but the nuked fridge was just one of many problems with this scattershot attempt. But now that Spielberg has figured out how not to make a good Indy sequel, he’ll put those lessons to good use for a fifth go-round.
