Steven Spielberg and George Lucas have been friends since the '60s, but eventually they became competitors as well. Yet as an advertisement that Spielberg took out in a 1977 issue of Variety proves, that friendship survived even when Star Wars overtook Jaws at the box office.
The following ad appeared in the Dec. 2, 1977, issue of Variety after Star Wars moved ahead of Jaws in domestic film rentals.
According to Spielberg:
"He was always more competitive with me than I was with him. He kept saying, 'I'm sure Star Wars is going to beat Jaws at some point ...'"
We're glad to see Spielberg was able to keep his sense of humor when it eventually did.
