If you thought the Marvel vs. DC rivalry was a new thing, you’d be wrong. Turns out the house that Spider-Man built was trolling DC all the way back to when Stan Lee was still writing most of the ‘books.
While chatting with The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel legend Stan Lee reminisced about the good old days when DC was chasing Marvel and trying to match their success. So Lee said they’d just basically start messing with DC whenever the company tried to copy one of their moves. Which is really funny, and shows the strong rivalry between the Big Two. Of course, DC is outselling Marvel at times these days, so the industry has certainly changed a bit the past few decades.
Check out an excerpt from Lee’s comments below:
“They’ve been trying to catch up. They’re doing the best they can, bless their innocent little hearts. We used to have a lot of fun with them when we started outselling them. And I know this because we have friends who work for that company and we’d get these reports. They’d start having conferences: how come Marvel’s selling so much better? They studied our books, and they’d say, ‘You know, I noticed they use a lot of red on their covers. Maybe that’s it.’ And they would start putting a lot of red on their covers. The minute we would learn of that, we would take all the red off our covers. And our books still sold better, and that would drive them crazy.”
We knew there had to be a reason for all that red on the covers…
