With Star Trek 3 (or XIII for most Trekkies and purists) set to hit movie theaters in time for the beloved and venerable sci-fi franchise’s 50th anniversary next year, and in the wake of the recent passing of Leonard Nimoy at the age of 83, there’s no doubt whatsoever that the original Mr. Spock will get the fitting tribute he so richly deserves in the upcoming Star Trek movie. At least, Simon Pegg will make sure of it.
Pegg -- who says the movie will go back to its Star Trek: The Original Series roots -- is currently hard at work writing the Star Trek 3 script, as well as starring as Mr. Scott in the new movies. ComicBook.com caught up with the actor ahead of Paramount’s CinemaCon presentation today, where he talked about his plans to acknowledge the beloved actor in the next movie. Here’s what he said:
"It would be crazy not to pay a tribute to Leonard in some way. His part in Star Trek and his effect on the world through Star Trek has been enormous... It's also the 50th anniversary of the show as well, so I would hope there will be some kind of acknowledgement. What form that takes? Wait and see but he is literally a legend and his passing is very sad."
In another interview with MTV, the actor teased Idris Elba’s supposed villainous but "kick-ass" role -- and in the process, kinda made Elba's casting official -- in the upcoming movie set to be helmed by Justin Lin, saying:
"It will be [an original character], yes. This is the five-year mission now, we’re out there. We don’t always have to keep bumping into the same people...It's a massive universe. So we’re gonna try and reflect that in the movie."
Pretty exciting news, to say the least. And now, let's talk about that Star Trek 3 title reveal. According to TrekMovie, which has it on good authority, the upcoming movie will be titled Star Trek Beyond. At least, that's the title the production will use during filming. So in essence, you can call it a "working" title. They say the name has been registered with the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), but they'll have to register it as an official title before the movie gets released, which seems likely to happen soon. The site claims that based on Bad Robot's track record of secrecy and such, the whole Star Trek Beyond could also be a decoy. I don't know about you guys, but I actually dig Star Trek Beyond and hope they'll keep the title. It kinda fits snugly with what they're trying to do with the new Trek movie; a movie that's gonna be about space exploration, and ultimately pushing that final frontier. To go BEYOND what the crew of the Enterprise (and Starfleet) knows of the galaxy.
How do you think Paramount and the Star Trek powers-that-be will pay a fitting tribute to Leonard Nimoy in Star Trek Beyond? What would you like to see? And what about Idris Elba’s new Star Trek character? Do you like the upcoming Trek movie's title?
