The Star Trek universe is vast and versatile. Its alumni include veteran performers like William Shatner and Sir Patrick Stewart, as well as Whoopi Goldberg and Kate Mulgrew. CBS All Access is tapping into that rich talent pool for the new series, Star Trek: Discovery.
Jonathan Frakes, who played Commander William T. Riker on Star Trek: The Next Generation, is reporting for duty. This time, he’ll put in work behind the camera. Executive producer Gretchen J. Berg explained, “He’s a fantastic guy and great director.” Co-showrunner Aaron Harberts chimed in, “Our cast is dying to work with him.”
Who could blame them? Frakes’ Commander Riker has been a notable presence in both film and television for 30 years. But let's be clear: This isn't a sympathy hire. Frakes has the skills to deliver. Since TNG’s cancellation, he has thrived as a television director. His list of credits include Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager, as well as The Twilight Zone, Falling Skies and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. We're in for a real treat.
Welcome home, Mr. Frakes. Welcome home!
