CBS bumped Star Trek: Discovery’s premiere date to May 2017 to allow some additional development time, and now the first cast hire has (apparently) been revealed.

Consulting producer Nicholas Meyer told Coming Soon that Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) has joined the cast, making her the first apparent hire for the new live-action Star Trek series. We know the series will focus on a first officer, as opposed to a captain, though there’s no word on which role Yeoh will apparently fill. Outside of the casting coup, Meyer didn’t offer up many other details.

Star Trek: Discovery is being executive-produced by Bryan Fuller (Hannibal), and looks to be one of the most ambitious Star Trek projects ever conceived (which is saying something), set around a decade before Star Trek: The Original Series. Fuller has said he wants to explore modern themes through the lens of Trek, and establishing a diverse cast is an excellent place to start.

CBS has ordered 13 episodes, and the series will run on the network’s streaming service CBS All Access. The show premieres in May 2017.

What’s your take on the casting intel? Are you a fan of Yeoh?
