There are definitely going to be some new faces this season, most prominently Christopher Pike (the captain who led the Enterprise before Captain Kirk), played by Inhumans star Anson Mount, with Rebecca Romijn playing his Number One.
Pike's arrival certainly looks set to shake things up, as he informs the crew that he's there to take command of the ship while they're faced with more mysterious threats from the depths of the universe.
But the biggest bombshell of all is that the one and only Spock is set to make an appearance (as showrunner Alex Kurtzman revealed today during the Comic-Con panel). "Spock is linked to these signals, and he needs help," says Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) while gazing out of the ship — but there's still no actual sign of him (or who will play him) just yet.
Star Trek: Discovery will return in early 2019, but four short films will be released in the fall to tide fans over.
