Anton Yelchin, likely best known for his role as Chekov in the rebooted Star Trek film series, died early Sunday morning in what seems to be a freak car accident.
TMZ broke the news of his death, which reportedly occurred when the actor was somehow pinned between his own car and a brick mailbox attached to a security gate. The car was in neutral, but sitting on a steep slope. The report notes that authorities do not suspect foul play, and are treating the incident as a very bizarre and tragic accident. The 27-year-old actor was reportedly found dead at the scene.
Yelchin was in the early days of a promising career, with memorable turns in Terminator: Salvation and Fright Night (a fantastic remake, if you haven't seen it, and Yelchin is great in it) to go along with his high-profile gig in the Star Trek universe (not to mention his breakout role came in 2006’s Alpha Dog). The third Star Trek film, Star Trek Beyond, is slated to open in July.
According to ABC News, Yelchin’s family is requesting privacy at this time.
Our condolences go out to all.
