It’s been over a year since Star Trek star Anton Yelchin died at 27 after being tragically killed by his own Jeep SUV last summer. He may be gone, but he’s not forgotten. This past Sunday, a statue was unveiled at L.A.'s Hollywood Forever Cemetery, with the late actor’s family, friends, and colleagues on hand to honor him.
Yelchin will likely be best remembered for playing Chekov in three Star Trek films, beginning with the franchise’s reboot in 2009. And so it’s fitting that some of his Star Trek collaborators made it to the ceremony, including director J.J. Abrams and co-stars Simon Pegg and Zoe Saldana.
Against a backdrop of photos of Yelchin throughout his life, Saldana also spoke at the unveiling, along with some of Yelchin’s family members. Other guests included stars Jennifer Lawrence, Emile Hirsch, Jon Voight, and Drake Doremus, who directed Yelchin and Lawrence in 2011’s Like Crazy.
The statue was created by sculptor Nick Marra and The Walking Dead FX artist and producer Greg Nicotero. It’s now on display for public viewing at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery’s Garden of Legends. The engraving at the base of the statue reads “Anton Yelchin 03-11-89 – Forever …”
