There were rumblings a while back that ABC was having initial conversations with Lucasfilm about finally getting a live-action Star Wars TV series off the ground. Well, don’t set your DVR just yet ...
While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, ABC chief Channing Dungey said those initial reports were largely overblown. Obviously, Disney would like to eventually leverage the Star Wars brand on ABC (which are all owned by the Mouse House) in some capacity (synergy!), but they haven't actually talked in detail about what that project might look like. Put simply: Dungey said there is no secret show sneaking through development, and it could be years until we actually have a Star Wars show.
Here's an excerpt from her comments:
"That was sort of a conversation at TCA that got blown way out of proportion. We have had some conversations in general about wanting to find a way to bring something from the Lucas Star Wars Universe to ABC, but that's far into the future. The focus at the moment for Lucas is on the current stuff that they're doing on the film side and then, of course, they do have the stuff that they are doing on XD."
A bit of background: Back when George Lucas was at the helm, Lucasfilm developed dozens of scripts for a potential live-action television series (some of which have since been adapted into other projects), though the show was shelved when it was determined the production budget to make it work would be astronomical for a TV series. However, effects tech has come a long way the past decade or so, and you'd certainly think they could find a way to make it work. Especially on a major network.
What do you think? What type of live-action Star Wars series would you like to eventually see?
