Filmmaker Pat Johnson has spent more than a decade working on a love letter to Star Wars and the sci-fi genre at large, and now we finally have a look at the finished product.
The first trailer for 5-25-77 has dropped, giving us a look at the story of a young man who uses a video camera to make his own sci-fi movies to escape from reality. It tracks how the release of films like 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Star Wars, affected his life. It’s obviously a passion project, and the low-budget seams do show a bit around the edges, but there’s no denying this thing was made with a whole lot of love for classic science fiction and the genre at large. Put simply, it looks like Dazed and Confused if the film followed a bunch of nerds.
The film stars John Francis Daley, Colleen Caomp, Austin Pendleton and Neil Flynn.
5-25-77 opens May 25.
