Creating a new droid with the intent of filling the same space as R2-D2 and C-3PO is a tall order — but Star Wars: The Force Awakens pulled it off in spades with BB-8. So, how did J.J. Abrams come up with this adorable new piece of Star Wars lore?

Some early concept art showing the evolution of BB-8 (including Abrams’ original sketch on the back of a napkin) has surfaced, showing how the concept evolved from two simple balls to… well… two more complicated balls. Some of the early designs included different-sized heads, and one sketch even featured a piece of tech on the side to hold the head on.

It’s easy to see how BB-8 evolved, as they nailed down the size of the head and even the texture and design of the body and the head. Along with the concept art below, Disney has put together a featurette tracking the evolution from page to screen.
