While Ricardo Diaz (Kirk Acevedo) has proven himself to be a formidable villain as we head into this week’s Season 6 finale, it seems that Arrow star Stephen Amell has someone else in mind as his personal favorite baddie.
Amell was on hand during this weekend’s Heroes and Villains Fan Fest in Nashville where the actor was asked by a fan who was his favorite villain. And nope, it’s not current baddie Diaz. For the Oliver Queen actor, the honor goes to the show’s Season 5 antagonist: Adrian Chase, aka Prometheus (Josh Segarra).
“I'm very partial to Josh's portrayal of Adrian Chase,” Amell said to the assembled audience. “I just think that that was a very personal thing and just, you know, Prometheus much like in the way that David Ramsey created Diggle, Josh created Prometheus. A lot of that stuff he had to arc out for himself. I thought that he brought the best out of me and hopefully I brought the best out of him. I just thought that the way that that storyline wrapped up I thought that that made it the best.”
The Arrowverse’s take on Prometheus was not exactly based on the DC Comics version of the character. On The CW series, Prometheus was Star City’s District Attorney Adrian Chase, an alias of Simon Morrison. This one was driven by revenge against Oliver when the Hood killed his father, a corrupt pharmaceutical owner named Justin Claybourne, in the very first season of the show.
Morrison trained under Talia al Ghul (Lexa Doig) and used Oliver’s discarded arrows to create his own weapons in order to destroy the Green Arrow’s reputation. His ultimate goal was not to kill Oliver, but rather to crush him mentally so that Oliver would live the rest of his life as a broken man. Heck, he even became Oliver’s ally to get more information on him before the storyline reached a dramatic climax when he captured Team Arrow; kidnapped William and his mom; and blew up the island of Lian Yu during an epic battle in the Season 5 finale... only to shoot himself dead in front of Oliver and his son.
What do you think of Stephen Amell’s choice as his favorite Arrow villain? Who is your own personal favorite? The show's Season 6 finale titled “Life Sentence” airs Thursday, May 17.
