In addition to being an absolutely hilarious late-night news host, Comedy Central’s Stephen Colbert is a huge fan of J.R.R. Tolkien. So big, in fact, that he apparently scored a cameo in The Hobbit.

Colbert and his family made a trip to New Zealand during the filming of the prequel trilogy, just to hang out with director Peter Jackson and check out the set. From that, Colbert apparently managed to score a super-secret cameo in one of the films.

Here’s how he teased his appearance on a recent guest spot on the Late Show With David Letterman:

“I'm kind of the breakout star of 'The Hobbit,' Dave. I don't want to tell anybody where I am, but I am in it … I and my wife and my two boys were invited down to New Zealand to play around with the folks in 'The Hobbit' by Peter Jackson. We went down there, and we're in a scene in Laketown. I don't want to say where in the movie. It's kind of a 'Where's Waldo?’”

Of course, this being Colbert, he could just be messing with us — but we’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for him when Desolation of Smaug opens this weekend. What do you think? Who is he playing, and is he even in there?
