Stephen King voted favorite U.S. author (Guess who tied for 9th?)

A recent poll conducted to discover America's favorite writer turned up 10 of the usual suspects—but one name we expected to find at the top of the list turned up missing.

A recent Harris Poll asked 2,775 U.S. adults ages 18 and over to name their favorite author, and here's what they had to say:

1. Stephen King 2. James Patterson 3. John Grisham 4. Nora Roberts/J.D. Robb 5. Tom Clancy 6. Dean Koontz 7. Danielle Steel 8. Dan Brown 9. J.K. Rowling/J.R.R. Tolkien (tie)

Interesting that Rowling and Tolkien should tie, but ... notice anyone missing?

That's right—Stephenie Meyer.

So are you as surprised as we were that she didn't make the list? Or do you think that's just a foregone conclusion when you only ask the question of those 18 and older?
