The final Twilight panel at Comic-Con, for the upcoming second part of Twilight: Breaking Dawn, was memorable for the entirely separate movie previewed at the end.

There were rumors that author Stephenie Meyer, showing up this time with the Twilight folks, would introduce a special preview of The Host, the film coming out next year that's directed by Andrew Niccol (In Time) and based on her sole sci-fi novel to date. Turns out the rumors were true, as the end of the Twilight panel gave way to a good 10 minutes or so of never-before-seen footage from The Host.

Not knowing the novel, it was tough to put the footage in context, but it showed a young woman named Melanie (Saoirse Ronan) being pursued and captured by the alien beings that have apparently possessed the vast majority of human beings and turned their eyes bright blue. She wakes up, rechristens herself Wanderer, and is promptly asked to access memories of a human rebellion belonging to Melanie, who still speaks as a voice inside her own head. (With us so far?)

Melanie somehow ends up captured again by a bunch of scruffy-looking guys hiding out in the desert, and led by William Hurt, almost gets killed, and seems to be the subject of a pretty massive chase involving a covered truck, a bunch of silver cars and a helicopter.

Will this be as huge as Twilight? That remains to be seen, but the crowd certainly lapped it up, giving Meyer's other creation a wildly enthusiastic response. The film seems to be a modern take on The Body Snatchers, with some of the Twilight romantic angle ... and aliens with funny eyes.
