Even wanted to go behind the scenes of E.T. with Steven Spielberg and screenwriter Melissa Mathison? Well, hop in the wayback machine and let’s head to 1982.

A rare 1982 interview clip featuring Spielberg and Mathison has surfaced, apparently captured from a long-lost foreign broadcast. The 3-minute clip packs quite a bit of interesting stuff into its brief runtime. Mathison talks about collaborating with Spielberg and how they developed the concept of framing part of the story around Halloween (since that’s the only time E.T. could actually get out and about). She also touched on the script itself and how her experience with kids helped hone the dialogue to make it more natural and believable.

As for what the heart of the film is really about? Here’s the logline, straight from the woman who wrote it:

“I think the simple understanding that these two little creatures, this little Earth boy and little alien could understand each other, with nothing in common. That, if they could understand each other, anybody could understand each other. I think that was probably it."
