From its first trailer, it was clear that the Netflix original series Stranger Things borrowed much of its visual asethetic from the 1980s.

But there's more to it than that -- the visual narrative frequently parallels with many classic films of the late '70s and '80s. Without giving too much of the story away, there are certain influences that are obvious -- Alien, E.T. and The Goonies being the ones that immediately jump out.

But Stranger Things is packed with references to films that you probably didn't catch, too. Thankfully, editor Ulysse Thevenon is on the case and has put together a little side-by-side comparison. What visual parallels did you miss? Only one way to find out!

Steven Spielberg, Richard Donner, Rob Reiner, Ridley Scott and even Tobe Hooper -- they all get their due in Stranger Things. Maybe that's why so many of us liked the series so much -- it didn't just have all the fashion and music from when we grew up, it's sucessfully cribbed from all our favorite storytellers, too!
